Imagined Wing

Brooklyn, New York, USA

STATEMENT OF ARTIST PRACTICE

Imagined Wing includes James Dunlap–a designer/illustrator and Edwina White–a project based artist. They have delighted in collaboration since 2005.

Each found the other through the lens of collage in a downtown New York gallery, where James was animating a music video and Edwina was exhibiting a series of works on paper. Since then, they have established separate careers but gather to work on film-based projects–first making drawings and building collage, even recording and mixing foley and found sounds. Both are collectors of ephemera and each value the meanings of things, their historical context and design application.

Edwina White became a renowned illustrator and fine artist, after graduating, and teaching classes in Visual Communications at the Design School of the University of Sydney, Australia. She moved to the US 20 years ago, working as an editorial illustrator for The New York Times and magazines worldwide, and has shown in galleries for over 20 years.

James Dunlap works in illustration, animation, and graphic design and is a professor at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Since meeting, they have collaborated with collage animation for gallery
shows, websites and award winning documentaries shown at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals. Clients include the Telluride Film Festival films and Sesame Street.

ARTIST BIO

Working fast in collaboration, we make stories come to life, animating with old papers, using our observational and expressive drawings, as well as found and foley sounds.

We find warmth with our subject matter and abide by a truth to materials, and alternately we find truth to our subject matter and lean toward warmth with materials. We both like to dive deep into historical and design context and are always willing to learn new things.

“Thus with imagined wing our swift scene flies in motion of no less celerity than that of thought.”
