Yannick Lowery
Yannick LoweryPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, USA STATEMENT OF ARTIST PRACTICEInspired by the cultural dynamism of the communities of my native New York City and my present hometown of Philadelphia, my work explores the creations of illustrated proverbs, portents, and historical souvenirs to guide the viewer through cultural introspection and responsible, imaginative perpetuation. I’m an interdisciplinary artist with a primary focus on paper collage. My work utilizes photography, found, and archival papers to employ world-creation and compile instigative, investigative waymaking devices. The gathering and use of these materials allow me to create tactile timestamps with full narratives. Often these narratives are drawn from an observation or a dream but most often from memory, personal and collective. The vapor of those memories is what I’m attempting to capture, reassemble and reimagine. This fragmentation is ironically ideal for cut and torn paper- and has enabled me to use it as an interstitial tool of navigation between other artistic mediums from animations to murals. I aim for my work to be utilized as an echolocation device and reflective tool for retelling and foretelling. Ultimately, I see my work as an allegorical tool for my true medium: the robust ecosystem of community that inspires me becomes central imagery for my work and participates in the concepts that inform my experience. ARTIST BIOYannick Lowery is a visual artist based in Philadelphia, PA. Inspired by the cultural dynamism of his native New York City and present hometown, his work explores the creations of illustrated proverbs, portents, and historical souvenirs to guide the viewer through cultural introspection and responsible, imaginative perpetuation. While studying design at Columbia College and at SCAD, Lowery has defaulted to the paper collage as an interstitial tool of navigation between other artistic mediums including animation, sculpture, and public installations. He utilizes photography, found, and archival paper to employ world-creation and compile instigative, investigative waymaking devices. The ease of creative accessibility with this medium has enabled Lowery to experiment with his artistic reach: from Illustrations for publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, as well as mailable artifacts, and large public murals. Ultimately, his collage works are allegorical tools for his true medium: the robust ecosystem of community that inspires him becomes central imagery for his work, and participates in the concepts that inform his oeuvre.
