To mark International Collage Day, local Ames artists will present a hands-on collage event. It is free to attend, but advanced registration is required. As a collage artist, Nancy Dominique has a particular interest in 19th century engravings, the very ones that inspired the surrealists from the late 1920s. She found in magazines of the time (Magasin Pittoresque) the original engravings used by these artists. In two face-to-face workshops, as well as in a Facebook group, she proposes to interested artists to play with these engravings, to immerse themselves in the great era of Surrealism, and then to compare with the collages created by Max Ernst and Max Bucaille. For those who do not have old engravings, she will provide cut-out pages. The face-to-face experience is more suitable for people who are new to collage. MORE

Intermission is a new, bespoke, three-dimensional structure, creating an exhibition and performance space; a place to pause and consider, through new and surprising way of encountering art, incorporating sound, collage and painted surfaces. After more than ten years of making street art out of street trash, Instructor Lance Rothstein, (AKA @fanclub.13) will guide this special workshop to commemorate World Collage Day. A quick half-hour introduction and discussion of the practice, will be followed by a half-hour scavenger hunt around the few blocks surrounding the Morean Arts Center to gather some materials. These found items, along with a basket full of fun scraps brought by the artist, will be transformed by the participants into intricate works of art celebrating the long tradition of collage artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hoch, Ray Johnson, Picasso, Braque, Rauschenberg and Rosenquist. Participants are encouraged to bring their own scraps if they feel like gathering some beforehand, and also to bring their preferred collaging tools such as scissors, pen knife, cutting mat, etc… if they have them, but all supplies will be provided for everyone. A group exhibition that delves into the issues surrounding waste through collage and assemblage; an artform that celebrates the re-routing of items headed to the landfill into art. Collaborative installations, solo work from gallery artists and information accessed through QR codes are placed side by side to draw attention to the problem of waste and the solutions available. Attendees can expect to see collage and assemblage art that highlights the reuse of materials while also learning about the issues here at home, how we can reduce our creation of waste and creative ways waste is being diverted from the landfill. In the Christian tradition, holy cards are small pocket-sized pictures for the use of the faithful that usually present a saint with prayers on the back. The circulation of these cards is an important part of the visual folk culture. Child Jesus is still the most popular holy card. The veneration of the Prague Infant Jesus had spread all over the world. In the church where the original statue is housed, it is ritually cared for and dressed by the Carmelite sisters, who change the Infant Jesus’ clothing to one of the one hundred costumes donated by the faithful as gifts of devotion. The Spanish and Portuguese travelled with pictures and statues of the Infant Jesus over the Atlantic Ocean to the colonial countries in South America. The Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) invites artists (adults & children) to send 4″x4″ (10×10 cm) collage art for its first ever Call for Art.

“Art for a Cause” is a call specifically for collage art, in conjunction with World Collage Day. All works submitted by Friday, 10 May 2023 will be displayed in MGUH and then made available to patients, caregivers, their families, and hospital staff. Each work will be attached to a blank greeting card and will have a sticker indicating that it is original art generously donated to the MGUH community. On March 1st Thessaloniki Collage Club announced an international open call “Send me a postcard Darling” (after a 1968 Shocking Blue song). All received postcards will be on exhibit for a couple of weeks in and outside the café and posted on their social media as they arrive and throughout 13 May 2023. A selection will be printed into a booklet. All participants on the day are also invited to make their own postcard. A second activity offered is to make a collage incorporating the number 6, celebrating the 6th edition of WCD and lastly, all are invited to leave their small collage mark on a big collaborative collage with this year’s theme: Life is a Jungle! Organize an Event or Project

One of the many remarkable things about collage is its ability to extend across borders and barriers and to involve people regardless of skill level. Professional artists at the top of their game sit side by side with members of the general public who are picking up scissors for the first time. This is unique in an art world that often trades on hierarchy and status. The collage community is generous and kind and welcoming. It is one of our greatest strengths. World Collage Day is one day we show the world how we do that.

We encourage everyone thinking about a World Collage Day event or project to take responsibility for educating themselves about the needs of their community. We encourage you to follow guidelines set out by health officials and be mindful that these may evolve and change over time.

If in-person gatherings are safe and possible in your community, we invite artists, art centres, museums, galleries, schools, and communities to celebrate World Collage Day by hosting events and projects that bring communities together. Consider a project that manifests the spirit of World Collage Day in a safe and responsible way. This may take the shape of a Window Exhibition, sharing Collage Starter Packs for your neighbors, or organizing an online Collage Happy Hour.
